She loved people and wanted to deliver compassionate care and healing as only a nurse can. Bke worked in a variety of roles ultimately working with a team of heart surgeons at St. Vincent Infirmary as a circulating nurse. Bke never stopped being a nurse, and she never stopped learning about the practice of medicine because she was also a life-long patient. Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of twelve, she learned firsthand the difficulties of managing her health with the constant challenge of a disease that affected every aspect of her daily life. Even as a patient, she mentored young nurses who cared for her. She was quick to offer praise to the many nurses she encountered on her medical journey. She was a patient advocate, determined and persistent in giving her best to patients and her peers. She was relentless in her curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge and was always looking for a better way to care for others. In her humility, she would disagree, but Bke exemplified the very best of what it means to be a nurse, and the recipient of the Bke Award will be a student who demonstrates the same qualities.
